چکیده

Copestylum alberlena, sp. nov. (Diptera: Syrphidae) was reared from larvae collected in decaying platyclades of Opuntia Mill. (Cactaceae) in the state of Veracruz (México). The thirdinstar larva, puparium, and adult morphology are described. Preliminary data about its life cycle and breeding behavior are included. This species is close to Copestylum tamaulipanum (Townsend), also breeding in Cactaceae, whose male genitalia are also described and compared with C. alberlena. The most important morphological differences between immature stages and adults of C. alberlena and C. tamaulipanum are illustrated and analyzed in a comparative table.

Neotropical Copestylum Macquart (Diptera: Syrphidae) Breeding in Fruits and Flowers, Including 7 New Species

Ten species of Copestylum (Diptera: Syrphidae) were reared from fruits and flowers in Costa Rica, Ecuador and Trinidad. Seven were new and in this paper, we describe them, their development sites and the third stage larva and/or the puparium of all ten species. One new synonym is proposed, Copestylum pinkusi (Curran) [= Copestylum cinctiventre (Curran)]. Similarities and differences between the...

Bacteria Associated with Copestylum (Diptera, Syrphidae) Larvae and Their Cactus Host Isolatocereus dumortieri

We describe the gut bacterial diversity inhabiting two saprophagous syrphids and their breeding substrate (decayed tissues of the columnar cactus Isolatocereus dumortieri). We analyzed the gut microbiota of Copestylum latum (scooping larvae that feed on decayed cactus tissues) and Copestylum limbipenne (whose larvae can also feed on semiliquid tissues) using molecular techniques. DNA was extrac...

LIFE HISTORY, BEHAVIOR AND MORPHOLOGY OF THE IMMATURE STAGES OF ENOCHRUS QUADRIPUNCTATUS HERBST IN THE LABORATORY (COLEOPTERA: HYDROPHILIDAE) I- LIFE HISTORY AND BEHAVIOR

The life history of Enochrus quadripunctatus Herbst was studied in the laboratory. The duration of each developmental stage, larval behavior, and preimaginal mortality rate were determined. It takes the insect a total of 43 days from hatching to reach the adult stage, with a high mortality rate in the first stadium. The mortality rate decreases as the beetle passes through the immature sta...

A review of the early stages and host plants of the genera Eumerus and Merodon (Diptera: Syrphidae), with new data on four species

The genera Eumerus and Merodon (Diptera: Syrphidae) have a high taxonomic diversity (300+ species altogether), but life histories of most species are unknown. In addition, these hoverfly genera are recognised to be pests (ornamental plants and vegetable crops). In this paper, early stages of four hoverfly species are described, Eumerus hungaricus Szilády, 1940, Eumerus nudus Loew, 1848 and Mero...

LIFE HISTORY, BEHAVIOR AND MORPHOLOGY OF THE IMMATURE STAGES OF ENOCHRUS QUADRIPUNCTATUS HERBST IN THE LABORATORY (COLEOPTERA: HY DROPHILIDAE) 11- MORPHOLOGY

The life history, behavior and morphology of the immature stages of Enochrus quadripunctatus Herbst from Iran are studied. The results of the work on the life history and behavior of this species in the immature stages and as newly-emerged adults have been presented as part I. The morphology of the egg cases, larvae, pupae, and the male genitalia of the adult is covered in the present work....
